News From St Mary's School

St Mary's School netball team were the winners of a tournament involving other schools in Beverley.

We'll explain the rules to you later!

Each morning and afternoon, before the lessons begin, the children and teachers take part in the new "Activate" programme.

It helps everyone to concentrate and work hard.

Netball
This term in sport we have had a lot of things to keep us active and healthy. There are clubs you can go to like multi sport and athletics that keep you going throughout the day. There was also a netball tournament and an orienteering competition to keep us busy. Ellie Jaram who was in the netball team and went to the netball tournament tells us a little bit more about it. “The game took place at St Mary’s primary school and St Mary’s A team and B team played
against each other then against Moldscroft, Keldmarsh and Swinemoor. I played attack or defence in all of the matches, those are my favourite positions. I go to the after school netball class run by Miss Ellis. My one piece of advice for anyone interested in netball is when you get the ball pass it quickly to someone on your own team. At the end of the day St Mary’s team A were the winners and St Mary’s team B came second.”

Activate
This year at St Mary’s the school decided that it was going to become part of a healthy schools project; we have created healthier lunches, sports and every day improvements.
Part of those improvements was bringing in a program called Activate. All the children in the school do exercises for 10 minutes in the morning and 5 in the afternoon. As they progress through the year the exercises get more and more difficult. These exercises get the children going and thinking in both sides of their brain ready to begin the lesson.

Orienteering
Recently there has been an orienteering competition at Longcroft
School (the nearby secondary school) The children had to use a map to run to different points in the Longcroft grounds.

They were split into teams of 2,3 or 4 and had to work with their team to gain points. First of all they were shown around the field and shown what to do. They then had a practise run to get them
going then it was time to get started. The competition went on for about forty minutes and at the end of it every one was very worn out. The scores were Minster first then St Mary’s second. The scores were good and everyone was pleased with themselves. There were medals handed out to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams and a trophy to the winning team!

News flashA 6-A-side boys football team from St Mary's took part in the BT Community cup at Hull City's stadium on Tuesday 22nd November. The team qualified for the finals on Tuesday the 29th November with an impressive 4 wins out of 4 matches. This school year has started off brilliantly sport wise and it will continue to throughout the year. There are still lots more opportunities to do football matches, competitions and other fun games and sports. In the summer there will be different challenges like country dancing and aerobics. We are definitely in for a fun year sports wise!
